COMPANY - WHO IS CASCADE?
Chris O'Callaghan grew up on the Sydney's southern beaches,
he made his reputation early on as one of the most talented junior surfers in Australia,
winning numerous contests and travelling to Hawaii and Bali Chris surfed some of
Hawaii's biggest and best waves. He became friends with some of Hawaii's famous big
waves surfers including the late Mark Foo.
Chris attained his trade as a Carpenter but his passion was always travel and surfing.
He was able to link these two together
while working as a Air Chef for Qantas Airlines.
Here he perfected his cooking skills, mastering the art of first class service and
travelled the far ends of the world finding waves and making friends. On these travels
he met Moana David the Tahitian Surfing champion. The two became good mates and
started the first surfing Pension in Tahiti - Moana's Surf Tours. The business was
succesful and over the years became the place to stay for travelling surfers in
Tahiti.
During an extended layover in Tahiti Chris decided to to join a friend of his on
a large fishing vessel travelling up to the remote Tuamotu Islands400 kms north
of Tahiti. Always in search of a new surf spot Chris loaded his board and gear on
the boat. The very next morning he was jumping off to surf spots that had probably
never been surfed before. Chris found and logged a myriad of spots that captured
both North and South swell. He was stoked and at that time decided it was he would
share this special place with his friends from around the world.
It was then the idea of running a surf charter boat in these remote and beautiful
islands. Chris along with his good friend Pat Boyle from NY and Moana David decided
to buy a really sturdy ocean going vesell for live aboard surf tours to these places.
They formed a Tahitian Blue Water Dream based in French Polynesia.
Chris scoured the boat sale yards of America and Australia everntually finding Cascade
on the Gold Coast. At close to a $1mill Aussie Dollars she wasn't cheap but her
sturdy naval architect design and good condition would make an ideal vessel for
the task.
Chris then assembled a small crew and organised to sail Cascade from the quiet waters
of Queenslands Gold Coast all the way across the Pacific to Tahiti a journey of
about 8,ooo kilometers. Young and enthusiastic the Chris and his crew headed off
to Tahiti. As they neared Fiji they came straight into the path of a massive cyclone
which was whipping up huge waves. Following a hunch that the harbour was not the
place to hide out Chris and the crew headed for the open sea. Fighting agianst montainous
seas they were in danger of being swamped. Luckily they found a massive Taiwanese
fishing boat battened down to ride out the storm. Chris pulled up on the lee side
of the ship and rode out the remainder of the storm.
The next day the full extent of the damage in Fiji became evident with some boats
in the harbour ripped from the moorings and deposited up onto the land.
After about 2 weeks the weather worn crew finally sailed into Tahiti's Papeete harbour.
Luck was still shining on Chris and very first charter to the Tuamotu's emerged
in conjunction with Australia's Surfing Life and Surfer magazine the Super Trip
was borne. On board were the future top 10 and world champions Andy Irons, Joel
Parkinson, Mick Fanning and CJ Hobgood.
Since then Chris has continued his passion for water sports by becoming a Master
Seaman
Chris's reputation continues to grow throughout the surfing world and he recently
became the Contest Director for the Billabong Teahoupoo Pro in Tahiti for three
years in a row. Chris is respected by the surfers and the sponsors for his total
professionalism and great sense of humour. With Chris you are in safe and experienced
hands, he will lead you on an adventure to great waves and great times.

a great surfer has together with Chris operated Moana Surf Tours, a land based camp
for the last ten years on the main island of Tahiti. Moana is an experienced seaman,
